  • An estimated 13.5 million people in the world take opioids (opium-like substances), including 9.2 million who use heroin.
  • Heroin addiction was blamed for a number of the 260 murders that occurred in 1922 in New York (which compared with seventeen in London). These concerns led the US Congress to ban all domestic manufacture of heroin in 1924.
  • Alcohol is a drug because of its intoxicating effect but it is widely accepted socially.
  • There is inpatient treatment and outpatient.
  • Mushrooms (Psilocybin) (AKA: Simple Simon, shrooms, silly putty, sherms, musk, boomers): psilocybin is the hallucinogenic chemical found in approximately 190 species of edible mushrooms.
  • Of the 500 metric tons of methamphetamine produced, only 4 tons is legally produced for legal medical use.
  • 60% of teens who have abused prescription painkillers did so before age 15.
  • Drug overdoses are the cause of 90% of deaths from poisoning.
  • The effects of methadone last much longer than the effects of heroin. A single dose lasts for about 24 hours, whereas a dose of heroin may only last for a couple of hours.
  • Amphetamines + some antidepressants: elevated blood pressure, which can lead to irregular heartbeat, heart failure and stroke.
  • Approximately 122,000 people have admitted to using PCP in the past year.
  • Steroids are often abused by those who want to build muscle mass.
  • When injected, it can cause decay of muscle tissues and closure of blood vessels.
  • There are 2,200 alcohol poisoning deaths in the US each year.
  • Amphetamines are generally swallowed, injected or smoked. They are also snorted.
  • Ketamine can be swallowed, snorted or injected.
  • Ritalin can cause aggression, psychosis and an irregular heartbeat that can lead to death.
