Substance Abuse Statistics in Escondido, CA

Escondido public officials have come together to form coalitions in order to prevent substance abuse. At the same time, they have aimed to put methods of intervention in place so that those who have developed an addiction or dependency on addictive substances can get the treatment that they need. In order to drive policy and strategy, the city authorities first wanted to determine its rates of drug and alcohol abuse actually were.

A first study looked at the rates of cannabis use among young people aged between 12 and 17. What they found was that:

  • 6.8% of young men use cannabis, which is a significant drop from the 9.1% it was in 2002.
  • 6% of young women use cannabis, which is a substantial drop from the 7.2% in 2002.

What these statistics have shown is that the outreach methods the city has put in place, many of which are outside of schools, for young people are proving to be quite effective.

A second study, performed by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) showed three key indicators of concern:

  1. There has been an increase in the number of people abusing methamphetamine. This is particularly worrisome because there has been previously a significant decline in the number of users of this drug.
  2. There is a growing concern about heroin abuse in the city, believed to be in direct response to prescription opioids becoming more difficult to access. Heroin is more readily available, as well as being more affordable.
  3. There have been an increase in the rate of accidental overdose deaths as a result of heroin. This is believed to be due to the fact that heroin is stronger and more potent than it has ever been before, and because it is now often cut with synthetic products that further increase its potency.

The three indicators above are of particular concern for Escondido. While their efforts to reduce substance abuse among young people have been quite successful, much remains to be done, particularly in the levels of strong narcotics abuse. Various detox and rehab treatment centers are now available for people to turn to should they have developed an addiction. Some people seek out this help voluntarily, while others are court ordered to do so if they have been trialed for a nonviolent offense and have a substance abuse problem. In so doing, the city aims to remove barriers to access.
