Brownsville, Texas, is home to around 139,722 people. It is found in Cameron County and is approximately 131 miles outside of Corpus Christi and 50 miles outside of McAllen. During the 1990s, the city experienced a population growth of around 41%. Today, this has slowed down considerably, although a 3.6% growth per year is still seen. Unfortunately, Brownsville has a significant drug and alcohol problem, which is reflected in the fact that the rates of both violent and property crimes here are higher than those in the rest of the state. This has given rise to a number of prevention, intervention, and treatment efforts, put in place through coalitions and partnerships among public, law enforcement, health, and education professionals, as well as nonprofit organizations, and the community as a whole.

Facts on Substance Abuse in Brownsville, TX

One of the things that public officials in Brownsville wanted to look at was whether there were any disparities between population groups of different ethnicities. What they found was that, in the population aged 12 or over:

  • 8.3% of Hispanics required treatment for an alcohol addiction.
  • 3.4% of Hispanics required treatment for an illicit substance addiction.
  • 9.2% of Mexicans required treatment for an alcohol addiction.
  • 6.1% of Puerto Ricans required treatment for an illicit substance addiction.
  • 7.7% of those who needed treatment for alcohol went to a specialized detox and rehab facility.
  • 15.1% of those who needed treatment for illicit substances went to a specialized detox and rehab facility.

What this showed public officials was that there is a pressing need among the Hispanic community as a whole to make substance abuse treatment more available. Too few people who need help go on to receive it, which is a particular concern.

The city also looked at the levels of tobacco abuse among people aged between 12 and 17. What they found was that:

  • 9% of all males are current tobacco users, which represents a decrease from the 10% rate in 2007, and from the 12.3% rate in 2002.
  • 9.2% of all females are current tobacco users, which indicates a decline from the 9.7% rate in 2007, and from the 13.6% rate in 2002.

While Brownsville public officials are happy to see that there is a decline in the number of young people who smoke tobacco, they continue to work on steering them, particularly young women, towards healthy alternatives.

Lastly, the city authorities have found that men were not as likely to receive outpatient treatment for a mental health disorder or addiction compared to women (5% and 8.5% respectively). Similarly, they were also less likely to receive prescription medication as a form of treatment (7.5% and 14.8% respectively).

The city authorities are very proud, however, of the drug court system, which has been shown to truly turn lives around. Individuals may, in certain circumstances, be given the opportunity to recover from their addiction through detox and rehab treatment. If they are able to complete the program successfully, their criminal cases are dismissed.
