West Valley City, Utah, is home to around 108,896 people. It is found in Salt Lake County and is around 36 miles outside of Provo and 7 miles outside of Salt Lake City. The city does not currently experience any significant growth, although its population is not decreasing either. There is a reasonable drug and alcohol problem in West Valley City as well. This is reflected in the fact that its property crime levels are higher than the state average. However, the rates of violent crimes are lower. Both these types of crimes have shown a positive correlation to substance abuse. With violent crime levels being lower, it seems that the efforts the city has put in place to fight substance abuse have had a measure of success.

Drug and Alcohol Abuse in West Valley City, UT

A number of studies have been completed on substance abuse in the city. What they found was that:

  • Full time employed and unemployed adults were most likely to use smokeless tobacco, specifically 4.7% of this population. This compared to 2.6% of part time employed, and 1.7% of "other" employed. Those in part time employment did see an increase in the number of people who used smokeless tobacco.
  • 8% of those over the age of 12 admit to having used an illicit substance in the past month.
  • 76.6% of current substance users use cannabis.
  • 58% of current substance users use only cannabis and nothing else.
  • 42% of current substance users use substances other than cannabis.
  • 23.4% of current substance users do not use cannabis at all.

There is a particular concern about cannabis abuse in the city. One of the reasons why public officials are so concerned about this is because it is an attractive substance with young people, many of whom do not see it as dangerous because it is a natural substance. The second concern is that cannabis is a gateway drug to other substances.

The West Valley City Approach

West Valley City aims to have a completely drug free city in the future. To do this, they are addressing current non-users in an effort to steer them away from substances in the first place. Secondly, they have put various intervention efforts in place to ensure those who have fallen into the trap of dependency and addiction can get the help they need. One way they have achieved this is through the various Utah Drug Courts, where nonviolent offenders with a substance abuse problem can be court ordered into detox and rehab if they want to avoid a prison sentence.

There has also been a lot of investment into making detox and rehab treatment facilities more accessible. In West Valley City, as everywhere else in the country, there continue to be far more people who need treatment, than people who get treatment. The city aims to change this by removing the most important barriers to access, including financial capacity and knowledge about the availability of treatment facilities.
