The state of Nebraska is known to have a very diverse and established illicit drug transportation network, particularly on the I-80. Of particular concern is the illicit transportation of powdered cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana, and to a lesser degree, heroin. Crack cocaine is less of a problem in the state, although numbers are rising.

Efforts to run intervention services for drug and alcohol abuse seem to be reasonably successful for marijuana and heroin, with fewer admissions into rehab and detox centers being reported. However, cocaine and methamphetamine admissions are rising.

Of particular concern in Omaha, NE, is juvenile drug abuse. It has been reported that 20% of male high school students and 14% of female high school students have been able to access illicit drugs within the school property. Additionally, 7.7% of young people aged between 12 and 17 have reported that they have used an illicit substance in the past month.

Nebraska as a whole, and Omaha in particular, takes a criminal approach to drug abuse. About 60% of all federal sentences were related to drugs, a percentage that stands at 41% nationally, by contrast. Approximately 66% of sentences were related to methamphetamine, compared to 14% nationally, which demonstrates the particular issues that Omaha is facing. It is also estimated that, each year, $176 is spent for every single Nebraska resident on costs related to substance abuse, equating to $291 million per year.

Drug and Alcohol Addiction Treatment in Omaha, NE

Some 15,729 people sought detox and rehab treatment in the state at the last count, of which 72% were male. In Omaha, primary drugs for admission were stimulants. Of particular concern is that there is a significant rise in the number of people who cite alcohol as their primary drug, but combine it with a secondary drug.

Omaha, like most other major cities, is cracking down hard on "pill mills". However, the consequence of this is that there has been a rise in heroin abuse, which is a cheaper alternative. Another significant issue is the so-called "Mexican Ice", which has been reported to be the greatest threat to the Omaha community. The problem is that Mexican Ice is very easy to obtain, and that it is often associated with property and violent crimes. As such, a lot of the work in state sponsored drug and alcohol treatment centers is focused strongly on Mexican Ice.

In order to address the growing issue of drug abuse, particularly among young people, Omaha is now home to numerous drug and alcohol addiction treatment centers. These include inpatient and outpatient treatment options, as well as medically assisted detox. Many of these centers are state sponsored, to give more people the opportunity to access treatment and turn their lives around. Additionally, felony offenders who have a substance abuse problem are encouraged to volunteer to the Douglas County District Court - Adult Drug Court, which started as a grass roots effort to improve the current situation, and is now commonly referred to as the "no jail" option. So far, statistics have shown this to be more effective, and less costly.
