Louisiana as a state paints a unique picture of drug and alcohol abuse. It has numerous opportunities for drug trafficking, including a well-connected highway system, and maritime access. A unique issue is that Louisiana, and particularly cities such as Baton Rouge, are very popular with tourists, and particularly tourists who come to party. As a result, there is a significant problem with \"party drugs\". Numerous local street gangs, Asian gangs, and Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs operate in Louisiana, and they have a particularly strong presence in the city of Baton Rouge. The result of this is that there is also a very strong link between drugs and violent crimes. In fact, the state ranks one of the worst in the nation for these statistics. At the same time, there is a confusing picture in terms of substance abuse and treatment. Statistics show that methamphetamine is one of the most commonly trafficked drugs into the state, and marijuana and cocaine two of the least trafficked. Yet, cocaine and marijuana are the two substances for which the majority of people attend detox and rehab facilities. Statistics on Drug and Alcohol Abuse in Louisiana The vast majority of the population of Louisiana is concentrated in eight specific metropolitan areas, of which Baton Rouge is one. As a result, while figures currently exist solely on state-wide populations, these are reflective, in terms of percentages, for Baton Rouge in particular. As such, the most important statistics when looking at all known drug and alcohol users and abusers are that:
  • 15.7% abuse alcohol only.
  • 21.9% abuse both alcohol and another substance.
  • 20.4% abuse cocaine.
  • 20.2% abuse marijuana.
Addressing Drug and Alcohol Issues in Baton Rouge Baton Rouge authorities are very much aware of the impact of drug and alcohol abuse in their city. As a result, a number of different intervention options have been put into place to help those who currently suffer from an addiction, or those who are heading towards it. These include detox and rehab treatment. Baton Rouge is home to the Hope Networks, which is a national organization that puts systems in place to lower the socioeconomic impact of substance abuse and addiction. Their goal is to bring together communities so that they can put intervention efforts in place that are suitable specifically to their population. Interestingly, Baton Rouge is also home to the Louisiana Association of Substance Abuse Counselors & Trainers, Inc. (LASACT). This organization has set the standard for many other locations across the nation in terms of ensuring substance abuse counselors can make the greatest positive impact. Preliminary results show that their work is making a big difference in how successful treatment programs are. The city of Baton Rouge is home to a number of treatment facilities as well. These include inpatient and outpatient services. Some of these focus on a specific substance, including alcohol. Additionally, there are a number of facilities that focus specifically on people who have co-occurring disorders, which means they also suffer from a mental illness.
