Pre-rehabilitative Care:

In some cases the condition of the addict is so far gone that they will require some very specific drug rehab services before they will be admitted to or even become willing to under-go a long term inpatient drug rehab program.

Drug and Alcohol Addiction Intervention

You might be wondering how to do a drug intervention:

Intervention is an action taken by the loved ones of an addict, a formal conversation where the family conveys the pain the drug use of the addicted loved one has caused.

These actions are taken in an effort change the course of life the addict has taken and encourages the addict to make the decision to improve his or her own life. The only purpose of an intervention is to have an addict arrive safely at a substance abuse facility and begin recovery. Intervention is a popular approach to substance abuse these days especially since the arrival of the A&E television series Intervention. Intervention is an action taken by the loved ones of an addict in an effort change the course of the addict’s life.

Intervention is a very powerful tool intended to drive a wedge between an addict and the drugs and addicted lifestyle and when done well this method is greater than 90% successful getting an addict to an  alcohol and drug addiction treatment center. Unfortunately it has the potential to backfire and instead drive a wedge between the addict and their family and even strengthen the bonds of addiction. It is always recommended that you consult a professional before attempting an intervention to prevent making mistakes. Phone our toll free helpline today to speak to a professional.

Medically Assisted Detox

Medically Assisted Detox is only necessary when a physical addiction to a substance creates health risks to an individual who would like to discontinue using that substance. Therefore it will be necessary in these cases for an addict to be placed under the care of a medical doctor to supervise his or her detoxification.

It is not uncommon for addicts coming off of pharmaceutical drugs such as benzodiazapam, opiate painkillers, sleeping / anxiety medications or alcohol to have serious withdrawal symptoms including Delirium, joint and muscle pain, sudden rises or drops in blood pressure, nausea, diarrhoea, and ongoing phantom pains. If an individual is suffering this way they should seek an alcohol abuse and treatment team that understands the severity of the issue.

There are many facilities that imply that they can handle an addict who requires medical detox in a non medical way. In some cases this is true; in others it can cause serious harm to the addict and deter the individual away from treatment all together. We have reviewed thousands of medical detox programs in the industry. Please phone our toll free helpline for a detailed explanation of the most appropriate addiction treatment rehab for your needs.

Medically Assisted Detox

Rapid Drug Detox

Rapid Drug Detox is a form of detox developed strictly for opiate (heroin, oxycontin, or morphine) users. This is a process where an opiate addict is sedated throughout the treatment so as not to have to endure the physical pain associated with “cold turkey” heroin detox.

When someone is undergoing rapid detox from opiates they are placed under anaesthesia then they are given an opiate blocker so their body immediately goes in to the most acute and violent withdrawal symptoms possible but because they are under anaesthetic they are unaware of the pain. They remain under anaesthetic until the withdrawal symptoms subside then they are revived and given a slow release opiate blocking pellet which renders opiates ineffective to the user for several months.

Rapid detox is even more risky than most major surgeries given the amount of time you must remain under anaesthetic and there is absolutely no counselling to unearth the underlying causes. Please contact one of our Rehab Placement Specialists today to see if Rapid detox is right for you.

Rapid Substance Addiction Detox

Buprenorphine/Suboxone Detox

Buprenorphine and Suboxone are treatments for opiate detoxification. They are new substances which can help ease the withdrawal symptoms from opiates. They are a two-part substance which both blocks absorption of opiates and eases the withdrawal symptoms.

As with any medication assisted detox option their effectiveness is always foreshadowed by the possibility of dependence to a new substance, the likelihood of which is amplified by the fact that the individual is undergoing detox from a physical dependency and already has addictive tendencies.

Buprenorphine and suboxone should be taken responsibly and for the shortest amounts of time possible 21 days is a common maximum for responsible prescribers. Please phone our toll free helpline to determine if suboxone or buprenorphine may be right for you.

Inpatient Drug Rehab Centers

Inpatient rehab center is the most critical phase of one’s rehabilitation. This is where new life skills are learned and old behaviors are confronted. This is where the change happens and an individual is actually rehabilitated or returned to an earlier healthy state. There are quite literally thousands of inpatient rehabilitation facilities across North America but they themselves fall into only five different categories. These programs can range anywhere from 28 days to one year or more in length.

There are thousands of drug rehab centers listed on our website with inpatient rehabilitation specific for each state.

Behavior Modification

Treatment is characterized by group confrontation. These are strict modified 12-step programs, wherein spirit is broken down in order to rebuild from a clean slate. They are usually government funded.

The breakdown process is usually facilitated by staff and senior residents. As well it is carried out in a confrontational and aggressive manor where any behaviour not deemed acceptable is squashed immediately and publicly. This is intended to make the resident ashamed of the behaviour thereby "modifying" the behaviour and further tearing down the addicted personality.

Dual Diagnosis

Dual Diagnosis facilities are created for those addicts who have been diagnosed with an addiction disorder as well as an underlying and co-occurring mental disorder.

Dual Diagnosis programs can be incredibly effective for those who truly have an underlying mental health issue but unfortunately many of today’s drugs create temporary Paranoia, delusion, Psychotic episodes and generally erratic behaviour so to be sure the side effects of drug abuse aren’t misdiagnosed as mental health issues dual diagnosis programs should be reserved for people with longstanding mental health issues. Phone our helpline if you have questions.

Many alcohol and drug rehab centers specalize in this kind of treatment and can be found on our website. For dual diagnosis facilities within a specific state, simply phone our toll free helpline for additional information.

Substance Abuse Dual Diagnosis

Biophysical

Treatment is non-medical, non-religious and holistic in approach. It pays specific attention to the physical side of addiction in order to eliminate the symptoms of addiction. Addiction is classified as a curable condition, rather than an incurable disease

A two staged approach is used to restore both physical and psychological health. A holistic detoxification process is done first to gradually eliminate any residual drug residues from the body reducing the likelihood of periodic cravings. A healthy approach to eating, living, and exercise is maintained throughout the program. Once the physical rehabilitation is complete and the physical body is restored to its former state. The person undergoes a re-education which establishes healthy boundaries and unearths the underlying causes for their drug use so the individual can experience life in an entirely new way completely free from drug use.

12-Step

The 12-step program is one of the popular alcohol addiction treatment options. Treatment is modeled after the 12 step Alcoholics Anonymous program, rooted in the belief that addiction is an incurable disease to be managed rather than cured/conquered.

The Twelve step Program was developed in the 1930's as a method of treating alcoholism through the fellowship of recovering alcoholics under the guidance of A "HIGHER POWER". There are twelve steps followed to assist with the recovery process and twelve traditions which are honoured to protect the integrity of the program itself. June 10, 1935 is the anniversary date of AA it was also the date that co founder Dr. Bob smith consumed his last drink of alcohol.

Religious

Mild in nature, addicts seek help through spiritual guidance and hard work. Religious programs adapt the dogmatic beliefs of the sponsoring religion to treat or remove addiction from the individuals life. There is very little in the way of official counselling; rather worship and devotion to ones faith are intended to replace the chemical dependency and guide the individual to salvation. These programs are usually low to no cost being put on by various churches or religious organizations.

Substance Addiction 12-Step Meetings

Post-rehabilitative or Secondary Care

These are drug addiction treatment options that can be done upon the completion of residential rehabilitation program to ensure that addicts and their families have continued success with their recovery.

Family Counseling

Family counseling is strongly recommended where a family member has made the decision to undergo residential rehabilitation as this is a family problem and it affects each family member differently. The focus here is to make a change as a family unit rather than place the blame solely on one member. Family counseling will help to ensure that the environment the addict returns to is normal after treatment has changed.

Out Patient Rehabilitation

Out patient rehabilitation is a mild form of care, but would not be conceived of as primary care in the vast majority of cases. Out patient care is not well supervised as the client doesn’t reside full time in the facility; rather, he or she comes each day for counseling services. This is ideal for youths or people whose chemical dependencies are very new and not yet developed. Out patient care is also ideal as an after care, relapse prevention and ongoing care once a residential treatment program has been completed.

Partial Hospitalisation and Counseling

Out-patient care is usually divided into two types; intensive out patient, partial hospitalisation, or counselling. Partial hospitalisation is where an individual attends daily rehabilitation classes usually from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday but they continue to live at home while the treatment is carried out. This process often ends with a person falling back into drugs or alcohol before the completion of the program as they are insufficiently prepared to deal with the freedom of living at home and all the access to money communication and old friends.

Counselling is the mildest form of care where once a week a person would meet with a counsellor to discuss his or her addiction. If you are unsure whether outpatient rehabilitation is right for you or a loved one phone our helpline and we can help figure that out.

There are thousands of drug rehab centers in the United States and we would be happy to help determine the first course of action and locate the specific services in your area to suit your needs.
