North Las Vegas, Nevada, has a very serious drug and alcohol addiction problem. Las Vegas is known all over the world as "Sin City", and people regularly say things such as "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas". Unfortunately, what this usually implies is that people are getting involved in drugs, alcohol, and the sex trade. And those things often go hand in hand: most of the people in the sex industry serve those who have substance abuse problems.

The Drug and Alcohol Issue in North Las Vegas, NV

Uniquely, the biggest drug addiction threat in North Las Vegas is not heroin nor prescription opioid. Rather, it is meth. The drug of the second greatest concern is cocaine, particularly crack cocaine. It seems, as such, that the city has remained stuck in the 1980s and 1990s, when those were the most popular drugs.

Research has shown that:

  • Cocaine is quite easy to access across the state, and particularly crack cocaine, which is highly addictive.
  • Mexican black tar heroin is the most common type of heroin in North Las Vegas, smuggled in by Mexican drug lords.
  • Meth is the most abused illicit substance in all of Nevada. Some of the meth are imported into the state, but some are also produced locally. There are strong links between meth and Mexican drug traffickers as well.
  • North Las Vegas has also always seen huge amounts of club drugs. These include GHB, Ecstasy, and LSD. These are particularly popular at underground raves, and in the various adult entertainment clubs in the city.
  • Cannabis is mainly smuggled into the city by the same Mexican drug cartels, although there has been a significant increase in homegrown marijuana. However, Nevada became the ninth state in the country to legalize cannabis for medicinal purposes under Assemble Bill 453 in 2001. Additionally, it decriminalized possession of small amounts (one ounce or less).

Addressing the Substance Abuse Issue in North Las Vegas, NV

North Las Vegas health officials are working closely with law enforcement professionals in order to stop the various Mexican cartels from smuggling in substances. They also work closely together with those in the sex industry in order to provide important help, including:

  • Detox facilities
  • State-sponsored inpatient and outpatient rehab treatment facilities
  • Needle exchange programs for intravenous users
  • HIV/AIDS testing facilities
  • Aftercare for those who have gone through rehab

There are two very serious difficulties in addressing the issue of substance abuse in Las Vegas:

  1. Substance abuse is rampant among those in the adult industry, and particularly in illegal trades. Because these people - mainly women - are engaged in illegal activities, they are much less likely to come forward and ask for help. Some are the victims of human trafficking, which means they don't have the opportunity to come forward.
  2. A lot of the drugs and alcohol in North Las Vegas are used by visiting tourists. As a result, the impact on the local health and law enforcement industries is not as clear.

Last but not least, North Las Vegas is also putting early intervention efforts in place to stop future generations from using addictive substances.
