This problem is being addressed by the Hillsborough County Anti-Drug Alliance. This alliance is responsible for the collation of data in relation to drug and alcohol abuse. This data is then analyzed and used to drive policy in terms of early intervention, treatment, and more.

Statistics on Drug and Alcohol Abuse in Tampa, FL

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office provided data from its Central Breath Testing unit in terms of alcohol abuse, and found that:

  • There were 4,442 DUI arrests in that year, a 19.9% increase compared to 2015.
  • There were 2,119 DUI arrests in Tampa alone.

What this demonstrates is that there is a significant problem with alcohol abuse not just in Hillsborough County as a whole, but in Tampa in particular.

Other statistics used are the results of the 2014 Florida Youth Substance Abuse Survey. This found that:

  • There has been a reduction in alcohol use among young people.
  • There has been a reduction in high risk alcohol abuse among young people.
  • There has been a reduction in illicit drug abuse among young people, with the exception of cannabis.
  • There has been a reduction in the number of young people who use prescription medication in nonmedical ways.
  • Cannabis is at its highest level since 2010.

The  above statistics are very promising, and they are a testament to the effectiveness of the work being done by the Hillsborough County Anti-Drug Alliance. One of the things they have also been able to do is signpost people who are trapped in a drug or alcohol dependency or addiction to relevant treatment.
