The state of Florida has seen a huge rise in the number of heroin addicts, and consequently in the number of heroin overdoses, including fatal overdoses. This is true all over the state, including in Jacksonville, FL. As a result of this, the Florida Alcohol and Drug Abuse Association has joined forces with the Justice Department and the Florida Department of Health, to determine the true extent of the problem. They have hoped that through more understanding and awareness of the particular issues facing Jacksonville, proper intervention procedures can be put in place to improve on the situation.

It seems clear from this, and from the increasing number of deaths associated with heroin abuse, that Jacksonville needs to rethink its strategies. This is exactly what they have done, creating a new type of approach that has three interlinked steps. They are:

  1. The intervention step. This includes educational resources to prevent people from turning to drugs in the first place, information and guidance on the dangers of drugs, support for parents on how to speak with their children, contact details for professional interventionists, and so on.
  2. The detox step. Those who have a substance abuse problem must first detox from their chosen substance. This an be incredibly difficult and sometimes, dangerous. Hence, it must be properly supported at all times.
  3. The reactive model, which is in place to enable people to regain control over their own lives by going to residential or outpatient treatment facilities for their addiction and substance abuse disorders. The recommendation is, wherever possible, to remain in an inpatient facility for a period of no less than 90 days, and aftercare must be provided as well.
