San Diego, California, is home to approximately 1,223,400 people. It is found in San Diego County, and it is around 28 miles outside of Escondido and seven miles outside of Chula Vista. During the 1990s, the city experienced a comparably small population boom, with an increase of around 10%. Today, the city continues to grow, at an estimated rate of 1.1% per year. As a huge city, it has a significant drug and alcohol abuse problem. This is also reflected in the fact that both its levels of violent crimes and of property crimes are higher than the state average. There is a positive correlation between these types of crimes and substance abuse.

Statistics on Substance Abuse in San Diego, CA

To understand the extent of the problem, and to put proper prevention, intervention, and treatment methods in place, San Diego officials have conducted a number of pieces of research. What they found was that:

  • 9.2% of the population over the age of 12 require treatment for drug or alcohol addiction.
  • 0.9% of the population went to a specialty detox and rehab facility.
  • 8.3% of the population required treatment, but did not receive it.

These statistics were a surprise to officials in San Diego, and have given rise to an extensive awareness campaign about the availability of treatment. In addition, San Diego County authorities have implemented the San Diego Superior Court's Drug Court, through which people can be court ordered to obtain treatment or else find themselves facing a jail term.

Further research looked into the extent of the substance abuse problem among young people aged between 12 and 17. They found that:

  • 7.2% of young people required treatment for a drug or alcohol abuse problem. This is a significant decrease from 2002.
  • 8.4% of those who required treatment went to a specialty detox or rehab facility.

As a result of these statistics, San Diego authorities have also put a number of preventative measures in place, in an effort to steer young people towards healthy alternatives instead of using dangerous substances. They have also increased awareness campaigns about the dangers of gateway drugs (tobacco, alcohol, and cannabis), and particularly around the use of tobacco, as they found that:

  • 28.4% of young people currently used tobacco products.
  • 23.9% of young people used cigarettes, which is a decline compared to 2008, when it stood at 26%.

The San Diego Approach

San Diego authorities aim to address the city’s substance abuse problem through significant prevention and intervention efforts. With such efforts, they hope that those who require treatment will know where they can go to receive it, thus increasing access to both residential and outpatient facilities; and that a variety of aftercare programs will have the necessary funds. They also aim to remove financial barriers by offering various state sponsored treatment facilities, by encouraging private facilities to develop payment plans.

At the same time, the city has invested heavily in messages highlighting the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse, both inside schools and outside in the community. They have also worked closely with parents, in an effort to help them understand the importance of strongly disapproving of any kind of substance use in their children.
