Anaheim, CA, is a well-known place for both good and bad reasons. It is a popular tourist destination, but it also has a lot of racial tension. And, as with many other parts of the country, it is also has a significant substance abuse problem. As a result of this, the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner Division conducted a study to determine what sort of treatment should be made available, and how to put in place early intervention efforts.

Findings of Drug and Alcohol Abuse in Orange County Study

The report, "Drug & Alcohol Overdose Hospitalization & Death in Orange County", stated that:

  • Every year, 600 people die and 5,000 people are hospitalized as a result of overdoses.
  • 54% of all overdoses are related to benzodiazepine drugs and opioid substances.
  • 35% of all deaths due to overdose are caused by people abusing one or more drugs, as well as alcohol.
  • The most frequently abused substances are prescription opioid painkillers.
  • 80% of overdose deaths were accidental, and 50% were due to prescription drugs.
  • Anaheim is a city of particular concern when it comes to drug and alcohol abuse.

The finding about Anaheim had made city officials very worried, which prompted them to conduct their own study into the levels of drug and alcohol abuse in the city itself. They found that of the 345,012 people who live in the city:

  • 83,042 consume alcohol to excess.
  • 32,179 people abuse illicit substances, 5,084 of which also drink alcohol.
  • 4,859 are known to use cannabis.
  • 4,087 are addicted to heroin.
  • 3,894 people use powder or crack cocaine.
  • 2,478 people use stimulants.
  • 1,030 people use opiates other than heroin.

What these statistics demonstrate is that the heroin epidemic has reached Anaheim. Heroin is often far more accessible and affordable than prescription medication that are often abused, leading to people choosing heroin instead. That being said, the statistics from the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner Division in terms of the impact on the health care system were correct. Research found that, in terms of emergency room admissions:

  • 693 were in relation to heroin.
  • 311 were in relation to cocaine.
  • 138 were in relation to meth.
  • 70 were in relation to ecstasy.
  • A whopping 1,246 were in relation to prescription drugs.

Following these studies, Anaheim officials also investigated public perception of substance abuse in the city, using this to drive policy in terms of addiction prevention and treatment. They found that:

  • 89% of people know someone in Anaheim who uses cannabis.
  • - 62% of people believe cannabis should be available for medicinal purposes.
  • 50% were between the ages of 18 and 25 when they first tried an illicit substance.
  • 57% feel it is easy to access cocaine within the city.
  • 77% feel meth use is on the rise in Anaheim.
  • 82% feel there is an increased problem with prescription drug abuse.
  • 88% feel better detox and rehab treatment facilities need to be made available.

As a result of these studies, Anaheim is investing in making sure detox and rehab becomes more accessible to people with an addiction or substance abuse problem.
